What is Milia and How Do I Get Rid of It?!

June 5, 2023 by debbiedavis

Have you noticed little white bumps on your face that won’t go away, no matter how much you scrub your skin? These bumps might be milia, a common skin condition that occurs when dead skin cells become trapped beneath the surface of your skin.

Milia is often mistaken for acne, but unlike acne, milia won’t go away easily and cannot be popped. The bumps are usually small, white or yellow in color, and can appear anywhere on the face, including the eyelids, cheeks, and forehead. Although milia is more common in babies and young children, it can happen to anyone, regardless of age.

So, what causes milia?

There are a few different factors that can contribute to its development. First, milia can be caused by clogged pores due to an overproduction of sebum. This can happen when your skin produces too much oil, which can also contribute to acne breakouts. Excess oil from skincare products can also be to blame. Second, milia can be caused by damage to the skin, such as sunburn or injury that results in blisters. Lastly, dry skin can be the cause for these pesky white bumps that you can’t get rid of.

While milia is generally harmless and doesn’t pose a major health risk, it can be unsightly and bothersome. Fortunately, there are ways to get rid of it.

So how do you get rid of it?

The BioRePeel from Sleekskin® Aesthetics is an excellent way to treat the skin and rid the pores of milia-causing debris. Additionally, professionally done extractions could  remove ones that have already formed without causing scarring or further damage to the skin. Another option is to use topical treatments, such as the Sleekskin® Retinol Radiance or Sleekskin® Overnight Facial Exfoliant, to help slough off dead skin cells and promote cell turnover.

If you want to prevent milia from developing in the first place, there are a few things you can do. The first is to avoid using heavy or oily skincare products that can clog pores. Instead, trust a professional (such as Sleekskin®) to determine what products are best for your skin type.

In conclusion, milia is a common skin condition that can be frustrating to deal with, but it is treatable. If you’re struggling with milia, don’t suffer anymore. Instead, schedule your appointment with Sleekskin® today, and remember prevention is key, so take good care of your skin to keep it healthy and glowing.

Why you shouldn’t be afraid to switch up your skincare routine

May 3, 2023 by debbiedavis

Are you someone who has been using the same skincare products for years? It may be time to consider switching up your routine! While we’ve all heard the phrase “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” there are actually several great reasons you may want to consider changing up your skincare routine. Here are three great reasons to venture outside of your comfort zone and switch up your skincare routine.

1. Your skin changes over time:

Our skin is the largest organ in our body and it goes through a lot! As we age, our skin changes in a variety of ways, from becoming drier to losing elasticity. This means that the products that worked for you when you were younger may not be as effective anymore. By switching up your skincare routine, you can address your skin’s changing needs.

2. Your skincare goals may change:

Let’s face it, for many of us, our skincare journey started reactively. Maybe you used to focus on preventing acne, but now you’re more concerned with wrinkles and fine lines. Or maybe you’ve noticed that your skin looks dull and you want to brighten it up. By switching up your skincare routine and focusing on different goals, you can achieve amazing results.

3. Our skin can change with the season

Different seasons bring about different skincare needs. In the summer months, for instance, you may require a deeper exfoliation than in winter months. The activities you do during certain months can also play a huge role in your ever-changing skin needs.

At Sleekskin®, we believe in the power of switching up your skincare routine and trying new things. Afterall, our skincare line does carry 18 exclusive skincare products; why wouldn’t you want to try them all 😉 When you come in for your monthly facial we  can help guide you towards the right products for your skin and specific needs. So why not take the leap and try something new? Trust us, your skin will thank you!

Summer has arrived! Here is what your skin will need to survive!

June 1, 2022 by debbiedavis

Summer is officially here!!!! Which means beach vacations, BBQ’s and Sundays by the pool! You hear fun, fun, fun, but as your esthetician all I hear is sun damage, premature aging, and pigmentation!

As a lover of the beach myself, I would never tell you to flat out avoid the sun, however, I will urge you to take extreme precautions when it comes to your time spent in the sun. One study stated that sun exposure could account for as much as 80% of visible signs of aging.

  • Freckling
  • Dark spots
  • DNA damage
  • Melanoma and other cancers
  • Skin wrinkling
  • Dryness
  • Loss of elasticity and suppleness

…Are all consequences of unprotected time spent in the sun.  So how does one protect themselves in the sun and are there ways to prevent some of the damage we withstand? I’m so glad you asked 😉

Ways to protect yourself in the sun

The absolute best way to protect yourself is to avoid being in direct sunlight during the times of day when the UV index is at its strongest. This is usually between 10:00-3:00 pm but can vary depending on your location and the time of year. Of course, if you live in a place like Scottsdale, Arizona and it’s June, the sun is pretty harsh regardless of the time of day. Here are some other more reasonable safety precautions we can take:

Using a quality SPF:  We personally recommend and sell TIZO since it is reef-friendly and free of chemical fillers found in most sunscreen products. Regardless of what sunscreen you decide to go with, be sure to reapply it every two hours, or more if you’re in the water!

Wear protective sun gear: Accessories like wide brimmed hats, sunglasses and bathing suit covers can be your skin’s best friends!

Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and eat foods that are full of it, such as cucumbers and melon, to help keep the skin nourished. Think of your skin like a sponge left out in the sun! You need to keep getting the sponge wet or it will lose its moisture, just like us 🙂

But can more be done to omit the damage done by the sun?

While you cannot completely cancel out the damage done by the sun, there are certain things that we can do to lessen the severity.

Astaxanthin: This antioxidant has been shown to reduce loss of moisture from sun exposure while helping to reduce oxidative stress. Astaxanthin can be found in skincare products like Sleekskin® Brilliance Antioxidant Serum.

Nicotinamide: A powerful nutrient derived from vitamin B3 that helps reduce UV induced immunosuppression as well as assisting with DNA repair. You can get this by eating a diet rich in:

  • Poultry
  • Fish
  • Eggs

CoQ10: Another antioxidant that helps protect the skin from sun damage at a molecular level. Using CoQ10 topically has been shown to reduce the effects of oxidative stress, which is one reason we love it as one of the many effective ingredients in our Sleekskin® Cranberry Quench Cream! It makes it the perfect moisturizer to hydrate and treat the skin before and after your time in the sun!

There are so many ways to make your time having fun in the sun safe for your skin… Admittedly it does take a little planning and thoughtfulness, but it is more than worth it! Keep a sunbag packed with all of your sun-safety necessities so you never forget anything and head to www.sleekskinaz.com to shop for products that will keep your skin safe and protected from the aging sun-rays!
