Summer has arrived! Here is what your skin will need to survive!

June 1, 2022 by debbiedavis

Summer is officially here!!!! Which means beach vacations, BBQ’s and Sundays by the pool! You hear fun, fun, fun, but as your esthetician all I hear is sun damage, premature aging, and pigmentation!

As a lover of the beach myself, I would never tell you to flat out avoid the sun, however, I will urge you to take extreme precautions when it comes to your time spent in the sun. One study stated that sun exposure could account for as much as 80% of visible signs of aging.

  • Freckling
  • Dark spots
  • DNA damage
  • Melanoma and other cancers
  • Skin wrinkling
  • Dryness
  • Loss of elasticity and suppleness

…Are all consequences of unprotected time spent in the sun.  So how does one protect themselves in the sun and are there ways to prevent some of the damage we withstand? I’m so glad you asked 😉

Ways to protect yourself in the sun

The absolute best way to protect yourself is to avoid being in direct sunlight during the times of day when the UV index is at its strongest. This is usually between 10:00-3:00 pm but can vary depending on your location and the time of year. Of course, if you live in a place like Scottsdale, Arizona and it’s June, the sun is pretty harsh regardless of the time of day. Here are some other more reasonable safety precautions we can take:

Using a quality SPF:  We personally recommend and sell TIZO since it is reef-friendly and free of chemical fillers found in most sunscreen products. Regardless of what sunscreen you decide to go with, be sure to reapply it every two hours, or more if you’re in the water!

Wear protective sun gear: Accessories like wide brimmed hats, sunglasses and bathing suit covers can be your skin’s best friends!

Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and eat foods that are full of it, such as cucumbers and melon, to help keep the skin nourished. Think of your skin like a sponge left out in the sun! You need to keep getting the sponge wet or it will lose its moisture, just like us 🙂

But can more be done to omit the damage done by the sun?

While you cannot completely cancel out the damage done by the sun, there are certain things that we can do to lessen the severity.

Astaxanthin: This antioxidant has been shown to reduce loss of moisture from sun exposure while helping to reduce oxidative stress. Astaxanthin can be found in skincare products like Sleekskin® Brilliance Antioxidant Serum.

Nicotinamide: A powerful nutrient derived from vitamin B3 that helps reduce UV induced immunosuppression as well as assisting with DNA repair. You can get this by eating a diet rich in:

  • Poultry
  • Fish
  • Eggs

CoQ10: Another antioxidant that helps protect the skin from sun damage at a molecular level. Using CoQ10 topically has been shown to reduce the effects of oxidative stress, which is one reason we love it as one of the many effective ingredients in our Sleekskin® Cranberry Quench Cream! It makes it the perfect moisturizer to hydrate and treat the skin before and after your time in the sun!

There are so many ways to make your time having fun in the sun safe for your skin… Admittedly it does take a little planning and thoughtfulness, but it is more than worth it! Keep a sunbag packed with all of your sun-safety necessities so you never forget anything and head to www.sleekskinaz.com to shop for products that will keep your skin safe and protected from the aging sun-rays!

The most sensetive skin on your face and how to care for it

April 29, 2022 by debbiedavis

It isn’t in your imagination, the skin around your eyes is sensitive and prone to showing signs of aging more than the other parts of your face. This area is susceptible to such a wide variety of unwanted imperfections such as:

  • Pigmentation
  • Dark circles
  • Fine Lines
  • Sunken in

But what makes the skin surrounding the “windows to the soul” so much more delicate, and how do we care for it to keep the skin around our eyes bright and tight?!

What is different about the skin around your eyes?

The skin around the eye is thinner than the skin on the rest of our body. Aside from that, we are constantly working and moving the muscles around our eyes, thus working and moving the skin.

  • Blinking
  • Making facial expressions
  • Squinting

Whether consciously or unconsciously, this alone is enough to result in premature aging. Lifestyle factors like our diet, sleep schedule, and of course our skincare routines play a HUGE part in how our eyes do or don’t age gracefully!

How to care for the skin around your eyes properly.

Protect your eyes from the sun

Protection is key to prevention! Using sunglasses and sunscreen (I recommend and carry TZO from Sleekskin® Aesthetics to my clients) is a great way to protect yourself from unwanted skin damage. Additionally, they are great for preventing you from squinting and causing more wrinkles.

Eye Exams

Getting eye exams is important, not just for your vision, but to protect the sensitive skin around your eyes from constantly being strained and damaged. If our less than perfect vision is causing us to squint, we can get it corrected.

Use the right products

Skincare products truly make all the difference! I l will always recommend different products for different skincare needs. For instance, for Sleekskin® clients battling frequent dark circles, I highly recommend the Sleekskin® Arnica Barrier Serum. Products containing vitamin C, like the Sleekskin® Brilliance Antioxidant Serum are also great for brightening under-eye pigmentation. Clients that are looking to minimize fine lines around the eyes, on the other hand, go nuts for Sleekskin® Vibrant Eye Serum which is clinically proven to give you tighter skin around the eyes.

Be gentle with your skin

The application of products matter just as much as the products themselves. I always recommend applying your products with your ring finger which will use the least amount of pressure. I also suggest using the ring finger. We always want to apply products to the underage area of the eye by working from the outside of the eye inward toward the nose.

Be consistent with your facials

When you visit Sleekskin® Aesthetics for your monthly facials, you have such a wide variety of treatments available to give you firm and bright eyes. Consistency is key so be sure to schedule your facials ahead. Make sure to carve that time out for YOU!
Bottom line… the skin around our eyes is definitely a little more high maintenance than the rest of our face. But that’s okay, because with so many solutions available, it doesn’t have to be a mystery how to preserve the most sensitive area of our face!

How your skincare routine could actually be doing more harm than good!

April 4, 2022 by debbiedavis

Everyday, the majority of us apply products in the attempt to obtain beautiful, glowy skin, but what if I told you that some of the ways people go about “improving” their skin, can actually wear down the very thing in place to protect it.

Our barrier from the outside world

Our skin naturally has a built in shield, the skin barrier. It is constantly working to fend off things like dust and allergens from penetrating the skin. When in perfect harmony it helps keep our skin:

  • Hydrated
  • Clear of breakouts
  • Protected from age-causing inflammation
  • Soothed for irritants

Alternatively, when our skin barrier is broken and damaged our skin can become more prone to breakouts, redness and overall irritation. It also helps the skin stay protected from loss of water which is imperative to the skin’s overall texture and elasticity.

Ways we compromise our skin barrier

In the attempt to achieve better skin, individuals unknowingly destroy their skin barrier by exfoliating their skin incorrectly.

  • Harsh beaded exfoliants
  • Exfoliating too frequently
  • Not properly caring for your skin post-exfoliation

…are all ways to put your skin barrier at risk. Instead, using gentle exfoliants like the Sleekskin® Overnight Facial Exfoliant, made with Glycolic, a naturally-occurring non-toxic Alpha Hydroxy Acid found in Sugar Cane. The Sleekskin® Hibiscus Microderm Scrub is another great option for a gentle exfoliant, great for use 1-2 times per week.

Restoring the skin barrier

Hope is not lost if you have done some damage to your skin barrier. Incorporating products with barrier-restoring into your routine can have your skin back to glowing and protected in no time!

Antioxidants – Getting plenty of A, E and C vitamins can help both protect and restore your skin. The Sleekskin® Brilliance Antioxidant Serum is a potent blend of antioxidants great for fending off UV damage, including damage to the skin’s barrier.

Arnica Extract – This anti-inflammatory skincare ingredient is great for reducing inflammation.  Sleekskin® Arnica Barrier Serum contains arnica extract along with cucumber seed oil which are great for reducing redness and restoring the skin barrier.

Why is my face red and how do I treat it?

March 4, 2022 by debbiedavis

Does redness make you feel less than confident in your skin? Erythema, also known as redness, shows in the form of patches that appear on the skin and are more common than you may think. One study found that rosacea, a single cause for skin redness, affected roughly 415 million people. That doesn’t even include all of the individuals that experience redness from other causes such as:

  • Seborrheic dermatitis
  • Eczema
  • Allergic reactions
  • Too much exposure to the elements
  • Acne

So what is someone who is suffering from rosey skin to do? What is it causing it and is there any hope? We are happy to report that we have all of the answers to that and more, so just keep reading!

What specific thing is causing our skin to appear red and how do we treat it?:

Inflammation: Our skin comes in contact with internal and external irritants everyday that result in inflammation. These include toxins floating around in the environment (like pollution and UV rays) that result in inflammation and slight damage to the skin that accrues over time.

Solutions: Soothing serums like our clients personal favorite, Sleekskin® Aesthetics Arnica Barrier Serum are great to treat and soothe skin irritation that causes our redness. Sleekskin® Calming Defense Cream is another great product to combat inflammation.

Autoimmune response: Another form of inflammation that our skin can experience is the type that results from the inside-out. Our immune system becomes overactive and thinks it needs to “protect” us from something we are putting in or on our body. This can result in skin irritations like eczema and acne presenting themselves.

Solution: Maintaining a healthy gut is important for our immune response, as well as our skin. Foods high in fiber and fermented foods are great additives to a skin-healthy diet!

Lack of protection: We expose our skin to the harsh elements such as the sun and wind everyday, which is why it is important to protect it daily with quality skincare products and SPF.

Solution: In addition to SPF, having products like Sleekskin® Aesthetics Brilliance Antioxidant Serum is sure way to provide your skin with additional protection thanks to ingredients like Ferulic Acid, an antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals and helps prevent damage to cells from ultraviolet light. Another great form of protection is a high quality moisturizer. These help keep your skin safe from drying out. A great one to consider is Sleekskin® Aesthetics Telomere Intensive Moisturizer, Not only is it great for protection,  but it also promotes the collagen synthesis process.

DIrty skin: When skin isn’t cleaned properly dirt and bacteria can irritate our pores, resulting in red and less than desirable skin. It can also cause unwanted breakouts and blemishes to appear, thus adding to the discoloration.

Solution: Make sure to clean your skin enough and often! Using a cleanser that is gentle on even sensitive skin, such as Sleekskin® Aesthetics Advanced Apricot Cleansing Cream is ideal for keeping the skin clear of harmful impurities without resulting in the over-drying that can often clog pores and leave us looking dull.

With all of these solutions, rosey skin doesn’t have to be something that we just accept and live with. In addition to all of these at-home remedies, Sleekskin® Aesthetics has several, in-studio treatment modalities to treat inflammation, irritation, and any other cause of redness. All you need to know about the benefits of High Frequency Facials

January 28, 2022 by debbiedavis

If you’ve done a little research into how to improve your skin’s complexion then chances are you’ve come across high frequency treatments. If you haven’t, allow us to shed some light on one of skincare’s versatile and multifunctional modalities that is virtually painless and extremely safe.

What is High Frequency?

High frequency treatments are performed with a wand that emits violet and red light. Unlike other energy-based facial treatments, the frequency is not passed through the skin, making this as non-invasive as it gets. The technology was originally developed by Nikola Tesla in the 1800s and was intended for medical treatments. It has since gained additional recognition for the aesthetic benefits after first being used for cosmetic purposes in the 1970’s.

How exactly do High Frequency Treatments work?

When a glass high frequency electrode is used a mild electrical current is passed through argon gas or neon which causes a buzzing noise. This produces light that is exceptional for treating both bacteria causing acne and fine lines! If you ask Deb Davis with Sleekskin® Aesthetics, the louder the buzz, the more there is to “treat ;)”

What are the benefits of High Frequency Treatments?

High frequency has several benefits, but the two most common and noteworthy ones are the antibacterial (from the violet/blue light) and anti-inflammatory (from the red/orange light). Common uses for this powerful combination include:

  • Clearing the skin of breakouts and preventing new ones
  • Reducing fine lines and wrinkles
  • Minimizing the appearance of dark spots
  • Increasing collagen production
  • Refining pores and minimizing oil production
  • Lymphatic drainage promoted by the rush of oxygen molecules

How long does a High Frequency Treatment take?

These treatments pack a powerful punch in a short amount of time. At Sleekskin® Aesthetics, we like to incorporate our High Frequency treatments into your routine monthly facials. They don’t add much time but can speed healing and ignite collagen.  I can also do the neck for this reason.  High frequency can be added to any facial for $12.00! Interested in learning more about High Frequency treatments or ready to schedule your facial featuring this treatment?
