Your DNA Isn’t Your Skins Destiny: Let’s Talk Epigenetics
If you’ve been following along lately, you’ve probably noticed I’ve been talking A LOT about some pretty science-y skincare topics.
Exosomes. PDRN. Peptides. Regenerative skincare. Cellular repair.
And there’s a reason I’m so excited about all of it!
The skincare industry is learning more and more about something I find absolutely fascinating: how our skin cells behave, communicate and respond to the world around us.
Which brings us to another word you’re going to be hearing a lot more of: epigenetics.
FIRST THINGS FIRST... WHAT IS EPIGENETICS?
We all inherit a set of genes, but having a gene doesn’t necessarily mean it is always “on” and doing the exact same thing throughout your entire life.
Epigenetics is the study of changes that affect how genes are expressed without changing the underlying DNA sequence itself.
Think of your DNA as your skin’s instruction manual. Epigenetic mechanisms help determine which instructions your cells are actually reading and using.
And here’s where it gets REALLY interesting for skincare.
Things we encounter throughout our lives, including:
UV exposure
Pollution
Oxidative stress
Inflammation
and overall lifestyle, can influence these cellular processes.
So while genetics absolutely play a role in how our skin ages, our genes are only part of the story.
YOUR SKIN IS CONSTANTLY RESPONDING
Your skin is not just sitting there waiting to get older!
It is a living, dynamic organ that is constantly responding to its environment, communicating between cells, repairing damage, producing proteins, regulating inflammation and renewing itself.
As we age, some of those processes naturally become less efficient. Add decades of sun exposure, environmental stress and inflammation, and eventually we start seeing the results on the surface:
Fine lines.
Uneven pigmentation.
Loss of elasticity.
Dryness. Dullness.
Changes in texture.
This is one reason the conversation around healthy aging in skincare has become SO much more interesting than simply asking, “What gets rid of wrinkles?”
We’re beginning to ask: How can we better support the processes responsible for healthy skin in the first place?
AND THIS IS WHERE REGENERATIVE SKINCARE ENTERS THE CHAT
If you read my recent blogs about exosomes + PDRN, now you can probably see why I’m paying so much attention to them.
These aren't all “epigenetic treatments,” and I don't want to lump completely different technologies together. But they ARE part of a much bigger movement in skincare toward understanding and supporting cellular communication, repair + regeneration.
Exosomes are tiny extracellular vesicles that cells use to communicate with one another. They can carry proteins, lipids and genetic material from cell to cell, which is why researchers are so interested in their potential role in skin repair and regeneration.
PDRN (Polydeoxyribonucleotide) consists of purified DNA fragments and has a history in regenerative medicine. Research suggests it may support processes involved in tissue repair, hydration, inflammation and collagen production.
Then we have ingredients like peptides, antioxidants and growth factors, which interact with skin biology in their own ways.
Different science. Different mechanisms. But a similar question:
Instead of only treating what we SEE on the surface, how can we better support what our skin is doing underneath it?
THIS IS EXACTLY WHY SLEEKSKIN® KEEPS EVOLVING
If you've been with me for a while, you know I'm not interested in adding something to Sleekskin® simply because TikTok decided it's the ingredient of the week.
I want to know WHY it works.
That curiosity is exactly what led me to start incorporating newer regenerative options like RD + PDRN Targeted Skin Infusions into Sleekskin® treatments.
Our PDRN infusion is designed to support skin renewal, texture, elasticity, hydration + overall skin quality, while RD focuses on repair + defense, using peptides, antioxidants and hydrating factors to support a stronger, healthier skin barrier.
And rather than simply putting these ingredients on your skin and calling it a day, we can pair targeted infusions with treatments such as Rezenerate + Jet Plasma, depending on your skin and your goals.
This is where skincare gets really exciting for me!
DOES THAT MEAN WE CAN “TURN OFF” AGING?
Wouldn't THAT be nice?!
No.
And whenever you see a skincare product claiming it can literally rewrite your DNA, reverse your biological age or magically switch your “youth genes” back on, I want you to put your skeptical hat on.
Epigenetics is a legitimate and rapidly developing area of science. It does NOT mean we've discovered a serum that lets us control our genes like a light switch.
What it does give us is a much more sophisticated understanding of aging.
Your skin is influenced by your genetics, but also by sun exposure, environment, inflammation, lifestyle, skincare habits and the biological processes happening within the skin itself.
That means healthy aging isn't about finding ONE miracle ingredient.
It's about creating an environment that helps your skin function as beautifully as possible.
THAT'S THE FUTURE OF SKINCARE I'M EXCITED ABOUT
The more we understand about cellular communication, inflammation, oxidative stress, skin-barrier function and regeneration, the more intentional we can become about the treatments and ingredients we choose.
That may mean PDRN or regenerative ingredients when your skin could benefit from additional repair support.
It might mean antioxidants to help defend against environmental stress.
It might mean peptides to support healthy-looking, resilient skin.
And sometimes, it means sticking with the basics: protecting your skin from Arizona sunshine, maintaining a healthy barrier, staying consistent with your home care + getting regular professional treatments.
The goal at Sleekskin® has never been to stop aging.
It's to understand your skin, work WITH it and give it the support it needs to stay healthy, strong + absolutely gorgeous through every stage.
And the more science teaches us about our skin, the more tools we have to do exactly that.
Pretty exciting stuff if you ask me!
SO... WHAT PRODUCTS ARE WE USING?
Okay, so after ALL of that science, let's bring it back to your bathroom counter.
If the goal is to create an environment that supports healthy skin function + its best gene expression, there are a few Sleekskin® heavy hitters I come back to again and again.
Brilliance Antioxidant Serum
Antioxidants are a BIG part of this conversation because oxidative stress is one of the environmental factors that can influence how our skin behaves over time. Brilliance helps defend against free-radical damage while supporting brighter, healthier-looking skin.
Retinol Radiance Serum
Retinol is one of our most tried-and-true ingredients for supporting healthy skin renewal. It helps encourage cell turnover, improve the appearance of texture + pigmentation and support collagen for smoother, more resilient-looking skin.
Sleekskin® Factor 10
Another powerhouse for supporting healthy, gorgeous skin. Factor 10 helps support the skin's natural renewal + repair processes, making it a beautiful addition when we're thinking beyond what we see on the surface and focusing on overall skin function.
Bearberry Bright Cream
With 10% azelaic acid, 5% niacinamide, alpha arbutin + vitamin C, Bearberry is doing A LOT of heavy lifting. It supports brighter, more even-looking skin while helping address inflammation, oxidative stress + the appearance of unwanted pigmentation.
None of these products are magically flipping your genes on or off. That's not how this works!
What they are doing is giving your skin proven ingredients that help support the processes we've been talking about throughout this entire blog: antioxidant defense, healthy cell turnover, barrier function, repair + overall skin resilience.
In other words, we're creating the best environment we can for your skin to do what it already knows how to do.
